Together, we can deliver!
Shattuck Meals on Wheels is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization housed at Newman Memorial Hospital, that provides nutritious meals to homebound citizens of our community (regardless of age) so they may maintain their independence and quality of life. In addition to providing well-balanced and healthy meals, this program also allows for a daily wellness and safety check and much-needed human connection to homebound community members.
The Meals on Wheels idea originated in the United Kingdom during the Blitz in the Second World War, when many people lost their homes and therefore the ability to cook their own food. Here in Shattuck the Meals on Wheels program was started in the 1980’s by Reverend Moody of the Methodist Church. He noticed a need in the community and thanks to the program’s first driver, Juanita Manske, Shattuck Meals on Wheels began!
If you would like to volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels, please contact Claudette Ehrlich at 580.938.2953. She encourages our community members to participate for many positive reasons stating, “It’s a great way to get acquainted with the Shattuck population that is not able to get out and about any longer. It’s also a great (warm and fuzzy) feeling to be able to connect with community members that were once very active in Shattuck and played an important role in our town’s growth and success - seeing the delivery drivers helps them feel connected and valued.”
Shattuck Meals on Wheels relies solely on local donations. They receive no State or Government funding. If you would like to contribute to the program financially, please give Claudette a call today!
