Newman Celebrates Hospital Auxiliary during National Volunteer Week
April 15th to 21st is National Volunteer Week. It gives us a chance to celebrate the contributions made by millions of volunteers across the United States. At Newman Memorial Hospital, we are delighted to highlight on a very special group of volunteers who make up the Hospital Auxiliary. These ladies are often affectionately referred to as our “the Pink Ladies”. These ladies in pink donate their time and energy week after week to support our community and hospital in many ways!
The Hospital Auxiliary’s sole purpose is to contribute to the community we live in by supporting the hospital. This non-profit organization of also support and compliment patient care through their community service in our facility. The Snack and Gift Shop, located near the Main Entrance of the hospital, is open Monday through Friday from 9-3 and is staffed by these kind volunteers.
They are always ready to greet you with a smile, conversation, assistance with directions or wheelchair assistance. Whether you need to pick up a gift for a patient you are visiting or just need a place to stop for a bit and have some legendary chicken salad, these ladies are ready to serve. They also spearhead the Oklahoma Blood Institute Blood Drives at NMH as well as other community events. This group is an integral part of the hospital and serves as ambassadors to patients, employees, visitors and the community.
Last year this group of volunteers volunteered to be the driving force behind the R U OK Calls Program. This is a joint effort put together by Newman Memorial Hospital and the Ellis County Health Coalition in effort to identify and include elderly people who live in our community, but don’t have friends or family that check on them regularly. These ladies gladly pick up the phone Monday through Friday to check on these members of our community, providing a daily dose of friendly concern and security.
In addition to volunteering their time, the Auxiliary has also raised funds to benefit the hospital, patients and visitors alike through gifts, such as a new Surgery Carrier Bed, recliners for the OB Delivery rooms and new portable defibrillators. They have also funded projects, like gifts for pediatric patients, holiday tray favors and revitalizing the fish pond in the Reflection Room.
If you get a chance this week, please stop by the gift shop and thank our volunteers for being willing to give their time and resources to support our community and our hospital. If you are interested in joining the Hospital Auxiliary, come on in to the gift shop and let us know or call to find out when the next meeting will be held. All you need is a willingness to help support the hospital!
